NVTC NEIGHBORHOOD HAPPENINGS

Parents and Associates of Northern Virginia Training Center is a 501(c)3 organization. Our organization consists of parents and other interested persons whose goal is to promote the welfare and development of all citizens with mental retardation.

Northern Virginia Training Center offers the most appropriate educational and vocational experience for each individual based on his or her skills and interests. These tasks include bulk mail contracts, document collating and assembly, recycling, and numerous other skill building activities.

ExxonMobil "Helping Hands"
Clears Nature Trail

2010 Wish List

ExxonMobil employees participated in a day of volunteering, on September 27th, on the campus of Northern Virginia Training Center (NVTC). They partnered with Parents and Associates to plan and organize a work day to remove heavy debris such as logs and tree limbs which littered the Harry Wells Nature Trail. Winter storms, ice and strong winds in 2011 resulted in many fallen trees, affecting the ability of NVTC residents, friends, parents and staff to use and enjoy this nature preserve. Rather than working behind a computer, twenty-three ExxonMobil volunteers enjoyed a day working outdoors, dressed casually in jeans, work gloves, and other practical outdoor wear. They removed many loads of logs from the trail area, trimmed tree limbs, and dragged fallen branches to debris piles outside the trail. Later this month, a professional tree company will be hired to chip the debris into mulch. The ExxonMobil employees made a huge positive impact! Once again, this trail will be enjoyed for recreational and therapeutic purposes such as exercise, relaxation, nature education, and a variety of special events. On behalf of NVTC, Parents and Associates, and especially our residents, “Thank You ExxonMobil!”

Long Time Volunteer and Spiritual Leader Goes West!!

JOHN GREEN, long time volunteer and spiritual leader at NVTC, will be joining his family in California. We wish all the best for John and his family. But words cannot begin to express our gratitude for the countless hours John has contributed to the enrichment of life for our residents and their families. Whether reading to a resident, pushing a wheelchair to the gym for an activity, or conducting the weekly worship services, John was always there. And in those moments of family sorrow, it was John who was there, quietly providing comfort for family and staff. While we will miss John at NVTC, we are also confident that John will continue his calling to serve at his new home. God speed, our friend, and we look forward to your visits "back east!!"
